The Differences Between Film And Video Game Composing

A film composer or a video game music composer, they may seem like similar jobs. Both require someone able to write music, know how to make music that supports another medium and understand storytelling. There are however a few key differences.

Because of this, it is useful for a game developer to know how musicians approach making a video game OST. This is even more the case with games as it is with films..

Did you end up here because you need music for your game? Awesome! Have a listen to my music and if you like what you hear get in touch with me. With your help I'll make your game the score it deserves!

Looping in Video Game Music

First, video game music has to loop. The end of a track has to be the start of the track as well. This is because nobody knows how long the music will play. This means a composer has to write the music in such a way that the end naturally points towards the beginning of a track.

This isn't that difficult, but something that has to be taken into account. Few things are as odd as playing a game, being in the middle of a level and hearing the music kind of 'end' and start over. Part of the tension of your game is gone instantly.

Using Layers

Because of this, using layers can be extremely helpful. For a level you could have a basic track of low string notes. You can let a muted percussive track play along, which slowly unmutes as the enemy approaches. You can have multiple of these 'muted' tracks that only kick in when something happens.

In this way, you build tension based on the players actions. Not only that, but the world in which you play will feel even more immersive, as the whole world reacts to the actions in your game.

Using Royalty-Free Stock Music In Your Game

If you choose to use ready made music for your game, consider these differences. Make sure your music loops! I would always recommend hiring a composer, but sometimes budget just doesn't allow for this. I've got some royalty free scary tracks you can use free of charge as well right here on this website.
